Montelukast ( singulair) Not Linked to Suicide, Depression

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Sept 03 - A review of data from three randomized trials revealed no evidence that use of the allergy/asthma drug montelukast (Singular) increases the risk of depression or suicide, according to a report by the American Lung Association in the upcoming issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
Recent reports have raised concerns of a link between montelukast and suicide. The current study, conducted by Dr. Janet Holbrook and Dr. Raida Harik-Khan from the American Lung Association, suggests that this is not the case.
A total of 1352 patients enrolled in one of the three clinical trials were evaluated. The trials included the "Trial of Asthma Patient Education (TAPE);" "Leukotriene or Corticosteroid or Corticosteroid-Salmeterol (LOCCS)" study, and the "Effectiveness of Low-Dose Theophylline as Add-On Therapy for Asthma" trial. Five hundred thirty-six patients were treated with montelukast. All of the trials were conducted by the American Lung Association Asthma Clinical Research Centers.
There was no evidence in either adult or pediatric patients that treatment with montelukast negatively affected emotional well-being, the authors note. In fact, there was an indication that montelukast therapy actually had a beneficial effect in this regard.
"While our review of ACRC trial data is reassuring, we obviously cannot exclude the possibility of idiosyncratic reactions to montelukast," the investigators conclude.
